FAQs

Who is involved in the Vote Palestine campaign?

  • The Vote Palestine campaign is coordinated by a diverse group of Palestine solidarity organizations (ACLA, CJPME, IJV, JPA, PYMTO).

  • The driving force behind the campaign comes from the 1100+ individual and 65+ (and growing!) organizational endorsers who have joined the campaign to let their candidates know they will vote for the person who will stand up for Palestinian human rights.

What are the objectives of Vote Palestine?

  • In the short-term, Vote Palestine wants candidates and parties to know that from coast-to-coast Canadians want their government to take a principled approach on issues related to Palestine - And their positions on these issues are a part of our ballot-box decision-making.

  • In the longer term, Vote Palestine hopes Canadians will continue to press their government on the demands outlined in our platform, which are the starting point of the work that needs to be done.

  • Vote Palestine also wants to amplify the amazing advocacy work of grassroots organizations on a national level.

  • And for the many Canadians who feel ignored or disparaged by their government, Vote Palestine aims to build on the incredible mobilization that occurred in the spring and create a vehicle for Canadians, especially youth, to engage in the election and have their voices heard.

There are many important public policy issues Canadians care about. Why should we focus on Palestine?

  • Vote Palestine absolutely appreciates that there are many pressing issues of concern for Canadians at this time - we want to see stronger positions on many of these issues as well.  This does not mean Canada’s poor track record on Palestine should be ignored.

  • Vote Palestine wants to add a human rights approach to Palestine as one of these issues Canadians care about.

  • The majority of Canadians support Palestinian human rights. However, despite their years of advocacy, the federal government has largely ignored Canadians’ calls for justice for Palestinians - and also attacked advocates for their support of  Palestinian human rights.

  • Vote Palestine hopes that through this campaign, Canadians will be empowered to use the campaign’s tools to raise our platform demands with their candidates and their parties. And candidates and parties will know that Canadians expect them to do better on issues related to Palestine.

How was the Vote Palestine platform developed?

  • Vote Palestine wants to amplify and build on the important work of the many organizations who have carried out research and campaigns related to Palestine.

  • Vote Palestine did a scan of recent campaigns and calls to action circulating in Canada and compiled them into a list.  The listed items were then grouped together and these four themes emerged with accompanying action items.

  • These four themes represent the minimum demands we expect our government to take on Palestine. Organizations specializing in different issues can and should be demanding more than what is outlined in the platform.

  • As a result of the advocacy that has occurred around these four themes, both voters who have participated in these campaigns and MPs who have been on the receiving end of these campaigns are already familiar with these demands.
